Dear prospective graduate students,
Welcome to the Department of Physics and Astronomy at McMaster University. As a department, we understand the importance of graduate students to the strength and overall milieu f our research environment. It is not an exaggeration to say that our graduate students are doing much of the work that moves out research areas forward. We therefore work very hard to make our department the best it can possible be for our present students – and for our future ones.
We are a growing medium-sized department, with 29 faculty members plus about 80 graduate students. Every department has its own character: For us, on the one hand, we are well-known as a very research intensive department. Our faculty members and graduate students perform cutting-edge research over a comprehensive range of research areas in physics and astronomy, and routinely publish their results in top journals. On the other hand, since we are not an overwhelmingly big department, we are also famous for being a very friendly and welcoming place. In other words, by coming here, you get the best of both worlds, including a healthy balance between work and play.
After checking out the information here, we think that you will be persuaded to consider applying to our graduate program. We accept and evaluate applications all year around. Most students start in September, but we have also had some arrive in January and in May. All of our students, whether local or from abroad, are fully supported financially. The relatively low cost of living in Hamilton ensures that our graduate students enjoy a pretty comfortable life.
Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.
Best wishes for your future plans.
